Congratulations on your new puppy! To make your pup’s transition as smooth as possible, there are a few important things to consider.

Toys

You absolutely need to have toys not only so your puppy will have something to chew on other than your furniture and fingers, but also because toys provide important enrichment to keep your puppy happy and healthy. Having a variety of toys will ensure your puppy will stay entertained and have a fun way to play with you. Consider rubber toys that you can put food in to keep your puppy engaged or long toys that make play-tugging easy. Make sure any toys you purchase are not too small so the puppy will not choke on them. Balls, durable “soft” toys, and chewables like rawhides are also fun options for your new puppy

The Potty Spot

Choose a safe, protected area for your puppy that you won’t mind visiting multiple times each day. Being consistent with a potty spot will help make potty-training a breeze. A tip is to keep weather-proof dog treats near the area to positively reinforce going to the potty spot.

A Safe Place

If you are using a crate, decide where it will go, and if you are not using a crate, create a safe, enclosed area with enough room for your puppy to move around and comfortable enough to relax and sleep. Having this safe place for your puppy to sleep and relax is so important because it allows your puppy to feel secure and get plenty of rest while allowing you to get tasks done without worrying for their safety while they are out of sight. It is better to have this safe, secure place out of direct sunlight to make it easier for your puppy to sleep. Making sure this safe place is out of view from doors and windows will ensure there are fewer disruptions for your puppy’s valuable sleep. If you have multiple crates, you can place them strategically around your house (for example one on each level of the house) in case you need to quickly place your puppy there while taking care of something.

Following these tips will help your puppy feel safe and stay entertained while making the transition to their new house easier on both you and your puppy.
